A process offered to parents before they can appeal to the SEND Tribunal. A mediator helps parents and the local authority attempt to resolve a disagreement without going to tribunal. Mediation is free to parents. Before most SENDIST appeals, parents must contact a mediation adviser and obtain a mediation certificate — but they do not have to attend mediation if they do not wish to.
